New Scientist will have a small group allocation for this cruise comprising of 20 guests who will be accompanied by Dr. Russell Arnott, a renowned marine biologist and oceanographer. He will deliver a series of in-depth scientific talks and provide expert insights during all daily excursions to the New Scientist group, enriching the experience with his extensive knowledge of marine ecosystems and oceanography.

In addition to Russell the cruise will be hosted by an onboard team of expert naturalists, marine biologists and cultural historians, delve into the intricate connections between the parched land and the vibrant marine world just beyond its shores. Learn how these ecosystems support one another in surprising and delicate ways, and uncover the cultural history of the region, from its ancient Indigenous inhabitants to modern conservation efforts. DAY 1: LA PAZ ARRIVAL, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR

You will be met on arrival at La Paz airport and transferred to your hotel.

Baja California Sur’s capital, La Paz, is a captivating blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage and laid-back charm. Nestled along the Sea of Cortez, dubbed the "aquarium of the world" by Jacques Cousteau, La Paz offers breathtaking coastal scenery and vibrant marine life. You will have the remainder of the day at leisure to relax and explore La Paz. Stroll the picturesque Malecón, a waterfront promenade lined with sculptures, cafes and stunning sunsets, or explore the nearby beaches of Balandra and Tecolote, known for their pristine turquoise waters and white sands. Rich in history, La Paz also boasts a charming historic centre, with colourful architecture and lively markets where local crafts and flavours come alive. 

In the evening, enjoy a welcome meeting with the group and your expert.  

DAY 2: LA PAZ EMBARKATION 

You will have the morning at leisure, giving you the opportunity to independently explore La Paz's bustling markets, historical landmarks and unique cultural charm at your own pace. 

In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the dock, where the captain and crew will greet you as you board the ship, just in time to enjoy a cocktail and dinner with your new companions. 

DAY 3: ISLA SAN FRANCISCO 

Today, you will explore Isla San Francisco, a pristine jewel within the surrounding marine protected areas. Renowned for its crescent-shaped bay with powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, this island offers a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Its protected anchorage makes it a favourite spot for sailors and kayakers, while its rugged trails lead to stunning panoramic views from the island’s ridges.  

Put on your walking shoes for a hike along scenic ridges with stunning views, a wonderful way to kick off your trip. Go snorkelling among colourful sea life, paddle around in a kayak, try paddle boarding or just relax on the beach with the sand between your toes. The island's natural beauty makes it an ideal spot for outdoor adventures. 

DAY 4: BAHÍA AGUA VERDE 

Discover Bahía Agua Verde, tucked along the eastern coast of Baja California Sur. It is a secluded paradise known for its emerald-green waters and dramatic desert-meets-sea landscape. This tranquil bay is framed by rugged cliffs, vibrant cacti and small fishing villages, offering a sense of untouched beauty and authenticity.  

Explore the coast by small skiff, keeping an eye out for birds, seals, dolphins and whales. Meet a local ranchero and his family and take a mule ride through the canyons and mountains to experience the “real Baja”. This is a great area for hiking, small boat explorations and kayaking. Enjoy scenic vistas, exceptional exploration, excellent birding and vibrant culture. 

DAY 5: HONEYMOON COVE ON ISLA DANZANTE 

Today, we will visit a stunning, secluded location. The water at Honeymoon Cove is exceptionally clear with a turquoise hue, making it a great spot for snorkelling. Explore colourful coral reefs, diverse fish species and other sea creatures. Isla Danzante is known for its spectacular white sand beaches only accessible by boat. If you need a break from the water, there will be opportunities to relax on the beach, hike to a mountain top or kayak around the rocky coves. 

DAY 6: CAPTAIN’S CHOICE 

This morning, your captain will choose the day's activities. Weather permitting, you will be hiking the incredible Volcán Coronado. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike, Volcán Coronado offers numerous opportunities for exploration. Your captain may also choose to offer beach walks or skiff tours, where you will have a chance to see blue-footed boobies, dolphins and sea lions. In the afternoon, join your captain for a marine mammal search in the Sea of Cortez or, if sea conditions allow, we will anchor and take some time to explore Loreto, the former capital of all three Californias. Keep an eye out from the Safari Voyager for blue whales, fin whales, orcas and a diverse array of pinnipeds and dolphins. 

DAY 7: LOS ISLOTES & ISLA PARTIDA PARK 

Los Islotes, a small cluster of rocky islets off the coast of Baja California Sur, is famous for its friendly colony of California sea lions. These curious pups are familiar with humans and will joyfully swim alongside you and your fellow cruisers. You will arrive bright and early before the other tour boats, ensuring you can enjoy this activity crowd-free. Above water, the dramatic cliffs provide a striking backdrop, often visited by seabirds like blue-footed boobies and frigates. Opportunities for skiff tours will also be available. Whether you are swimming with sea lions or marveling at the vibrant ecosystem, Los Islotes offers an unforgettable encounter with the wild beauty of the Sea of Cortez. 

In the afternoon, we will head to Isla Partida Park, part of the UNESCO-protected Espíritu Santo archipelago, which is a haven of natural beauty and biodiversity. This uninhabited island, separated from Espíritu Santo Island by a narrow channel, features dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and crystalline turquoise waters teeming with marine life. Isla Partida is a favourite destination for kayaking, snorkelling and diving, offering encounters with sea turtles, rays and vibrant schools of fish.  

Whilst here, you will have the option to hike the island’s rugged trails, which lead to breathtaking vistas of the surrounding sea and desert landscapes. Alternatively, there will be the opportunity to go kayaking or snorkelling. 

DAY 8: ISLA CERRALVO, SAN JOSE OR ESPÍRITU SANTO

Today, your captain will choose a beautiful bay to anchor in before a day filled with activities. Enjoy the feel of warm sand under your feet on a beach walk, investigate nooks and crannies in the rocks by kayak or explore a little further afield on a guided hike.  

Celebrate your week at tonight’s special farewell dinner with an entertaining slideshow by your expedition team. 

DAY 9: LA PAZ DISEMBARKATION 

After breakfast, you will disembark the ship and transfer to La Paz airport for your flight.

Dr Russell Arnott

Russell holds a combined master's degree in oceanography from the University of Southampton, UK, and a PhD in marine biology from the University of Bath, UK, where he studied phytoplankton morphology and its influence on turbulent interactions.

He has worked as a commercial oceanographer and his research has taken him all over the world, from the Southern Ocean with the British Antarctic Survey up to the Gulf of Bothnia in northern Sweden. Having worked as a science consultant on a number of books, Russell recently co-wrote his first book, Ocean Endangered, with researcher Celine Van Weelden.

Russell works with the charity Incredible Oceans, appearing on TV and radio, and speaking at science events around the world. He is currently a Teaching Fellow in Oceanography at University of Exeter’s Centre for Geography and Environmental Science and an Associate Lecturer in Ocean Science and Conservation at Falmouth University.

PACE AND PHYSICALITY

As with all our cruises, they have been designed to be as active as you want them to be. There are normally a variety of activities on offer including hiking excursions, kayaking, snorkelling or skiff cruises. Most activities have accommodations for different levels of mobility. All activities are optional, so there is the flexibility to join some, all or none of the additional excursions and activities.

Accommodation

The Hotel Indigo, La Paz

This charming beachfront resort is nestled between the Sea of Cortez and La Paz Bay, and is just 10 minutes from La Paz town. The property has two restaurants, serving Mexican and international cuisine. There is a spacious pool area, spa and fitness room available. Rooms at the hotel are spacious and modern in design.

Safari Voyager

The Safari Voyager is a comfortable ship offering a laid-back cruise option. Set over four decks, the 34 cabins can accommodate a maximum of 66 guests. All cabins are outward-facing, equipped with hairdryers, bathrobes and toiletries, and are decorated with traditional Latin American handicrafts. There are plenty of communal spaces to relax on board, from the air-conditioned lounge and several shady viewing spots to the DVD and book library and open sun deck. During the cruise, you will have access to the onboard fitness equipment, paddle boards, kayaks, hiking poles and snorkelling gear. With a guest-to-crew ratio better than 2:1, you're in safe hands aboard the Safari Voyager.
